FACTS ABOUT NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela was South Africa's first black president.
Nelson Mandela went to prison for 27 years.
In his youth he enjoyed boxing and long-distance running. Even during the 27 years he spent in prison, he exercised every morning.
Nelson was not Mandela`s original name. His real first name is Rolihlahla. When Nelson was nine years old his Methodist primary teacher who taught him in Qunu, South Africa gave him an English name, Nelson. It was the custom to give all school children Christian names.
Nelson Mandala was on a terror watch list in the USA until 2008.
He owned his own law firm but it took him years to get a law degree.
He dressed up as a chauffeur to escape police.
When Mandela was released from prison he forgot his glasses.
In prison, he was a master at secretly passing notes.
He was the first person in his family to attend school.
